Doing hair isn’t just a job, it’s a career. Art + Science was founded on a European style of apprenticeship where education is the essential foundation to a healthy career. Our goal is to provide a long term stable home for every stylist, colorist, and barber on the floor. Education is our core, and every member of our team has completed the advanced apprenticeship, regardless of their level or background. If you’re fresh out of school or been on the floor 10 years already, we hire stylists of all education and experience levels. Our philosophy is simple: knowledge can be taught. We hire the person, not the portfolio.

Every apprentice is a paid full-time member of the team. Because we offer this world class education in house, we ask all employees sign a 3 year education agreement. The contract ensures that Art + Science will provide 46 weeks of education every year to assistants, as well as continuing advanced education once you are on the floor. We believe in our education so fully that we promise 1 year of walk-in priority to every new stylist who has completed the apprenticeship. Our locations see anywhere from 30-60 new clients every week, so that’s 30-60 new clients in your chair.

We are a departmentalized salon because we believe that the only way to truly become a master of your craft is to focus your skills on either cut or color, not both. The result of this means your clients will see one person for cut and one for color, creating an atmosphere of constant collaboration. We ask a lot of out of our team, and we give it right back. Every full time member of staff receives a full benefit package including health, dental, and paid vacation. That’s not to mention the parties, photoshoots, runway shows, cut-a-thons and all the rest. 

Front Desk

The Front Desk Receptionist acts as the first point of contact for clients who visit our salon or contact us to learn about our services. Receptionist responsibilities include greeting customers upon their arrival, answering clients’ questions about services via phone, email or in person, maintaining the cleanliness of the desk and processing transactions.

Our Front Desk Receptionist is the first and last impression our clients have of Art + Science, so we seek highly personable, professional, welcoming, customer focused and team oriented people to join our team.

Openings available only for a full-time or part-time position at our Evanston location.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Opening and closing the salon (key holder, setting the alarm, preparing the salon for a full working day, counting drawers and ensuring that the numbers are correct)
• Properly greet and acknowledge clients as they come in
• Checking clients in and out in a timely manner
• Offer amenities to our clients while waiting/check-in
• Efficiently booking appointments for new and pre-existing clients
• Sign on Livechat to chat with anyone on our website who requires assistance
• Offering excellent customer service at all times
• Learning the basic details of our products and be able to sell them to clients
• Performing basic clerical duties including balancing the drawer and spreadsheet
• Handling the cash drawer sensibly and responsibly
• Communicating whenever the salon is low or out of essential inventory
• Providing secondary training support for any incoming new front desk coordinators including basic tutorials on STX, Livechat, cash handling, closing, and answering simple questions
• Handling customer complaints with patience and empathy, and deferring to managers when appropriate
• Communicating schedule changes and client issues to the stylist in a timely and effective manner
• Contacting clients to confirm appointments and who need to be rescheduled
• Completing salon tasks delegated by the Front Desk Lead or the Front Desk Services Manager
• Keeping the salon client area and front desk area tidy and orderly for the length of the shift
• Provide exceptional customer service in all client-related situations

Apprentice

They are crucial to every single stylist's success; no questions asked. Every stylist, colorist and barber behind an Art + Science chair has completed our rigorous apprenticeship program before reaching the floor.

Under the direction of the salon manager and educator, the apprentice (assistant) is a hard-working, self-motivated, punctual professional with a passion for the beauty industry. This apprenticeship program is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience at a premier salon. Assistants will have the opportunity to work side by side with experienced stylists, colorist and/or barbers (including master level professionals), with shampooing, coloring, blow drying, or styling. We are a departmentalized salon because we believe that the only way to truly become a master of your craft is to focus your skills, meaning our artist specialize in either styling, coloring or barbering.

Building a relationship with each and every client, all day long, will be the best part of your day. It will also prepare you for your own business. This hands-on experience helps every apprentice to become a well-rounded professional. You will truly master multitasking by the time you end your apprenticeship with us.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Support our team of Barbers, Cutters/Stylist and Colorists
• Support Stylists + Barbers while Shampooing and sweeping their clients
• Support our team with shampooing out color, applying glosses/toners and offering a complimentary blow-drys .This will include hands-on training by our education team prior to execution.
• Maintain cleanliness of the salon throughout the day.
• Oversee Color Inventory
• Communicate with the Front Desk regarding clients
• Provide support for front desk staff

KNOWLEDGE/SKILL:

• A current license/certification in Cosmetology or Barbering (depends on which art you want to pursue). We do accept apprentices who are nearing their completion of beauty/barber school and will soon graduate(30 days or less). Proof of education will be required.

Salon Support

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Salon Manager, the Salon Support Associate is a very pleasant, professional and proactive member of the team. We are looking for self-motivated associate to ensure the smooth running of our daily salon operations. We are a bustling salon located in West Loop and looking for you to support us by performing duties that are essential to our success. The Salon Support Associate will complete various duties to aid in the general maintenance and upkeep needs of Art + Science.

Only a full-time position is available at our Evanston location.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Maintaining Inventory/restocking depleted or low products
• Receiving order from the salons various vendors, checking them in, restocking the shelves/ back room and alerting the front desk manager when orders have been delivered
• Maintaining the cleanliness of the salon throughout the day by sanitizing, sweeping, laundry/folding towels and other related general upkeep of the salon
• Supporting the front desk receptionist and salon stylist
• Providing excellent customer service and engaging positively with clients and employees
• Other duties as assigned

Esthetician

Esthetician – Full-Time (36-40 hours per week)

REPORTS TO:

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the salon manager, the Esthetician is a highly motivated and confident skin care professional whose goal is to make every client feel good about themselves. A self-starter who's eager to learn new things and meet new challenges. A friendly, easy-going person, who excels at being a team player, yet feels equally comfortable in an environment where individual achievement is highly valued. Most of all, the esthetician is someone who not only loves the beauty industry, but is particularly interested in the art and science of hair removal. This position will be located in our West Loop salon. Must have a minimum of 3 years experience to apply

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Remove hair by waxing, threading, or with chemicals
• Advise clients and suggest treatments related to their individual needs
• Perform airbrush tanning services
• Able to provide consistent services and treatments in accordance with state laws and salon protocols
• Achieve service and retail goals as defined by management on an annual basis
• Complete regular inventory counts of esthetician tools and sundries
• Effectively communicate regularly with Front Desk Lead and General Manager any equipment needs and request
• Ensure safety, sterilization, and sanitation procedures are satisfied
